With the innovation of new, exotic mooncake flavours such as truffle 🍄, champagne 🥂 and durian 🤯 every year, traditional mooncakes' place in Singapore seems to be uncertain. Based on a Milieu poll, nearly half of Singaporeans believe that exotic mooncakes will eventually become the new "traditional". Should we embrace change or put efforts into preserving the tradition that we've always known?

When President Donald Trump took to the stage on April 2, 2025, to announce sweeping new tariffs on Southeast Asian countries, the ripple effect was immediate. It's no surprise that it's the hottest topic of the region- the new tariffs ranges from a steep 49% on Cambodian goods to 10% on imports from Singapore and Timor-Leste. But while the percentages varied, the concern across the region felt unanimous.

Singaporeans sentiments towards the new U.S. tariffs
On April 2, 2025, President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs on Southeast Asian imports, citing the need to “recalibrate trade imbalances” and “bring manufacturing back to American soil.” These tariffs vary significantly by country, hitting Vietnam (46%), Cambodia (49%), and Laos (48%) the hardest. Singapore, while facing the lowest rate of 10%, is not exempt, and neither are its consumers.
